Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their sex assigned at birth. In addition to including people whose gender identity is the opposite of their assigned sex trans men and trans women , it may include people who are not exclusively masculine or feminine people who are non-binary or genderqueer , including bigender , pangender , genderfluid, or agender. Being transgender is independent of sexual orientation. The term transgender is also distinguished from intersex , a term that describes people born with physical sex characteristics "that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies". The degree to which individuals feel genuine, authentic, and comfortable within their external appearance and accept their genuine identity has been called transgender congruence. Many transgender people face discrimination in the workplace [17] and in accessing public accommodations [18] and healthcare.

London Trans Pride is the 'one day we're not outcasts'

Trans Pride Brighton & Hove – Online Event – 18th July

Pride in London quickly condemned the protests, but as a lesbian and a feminist, I worried that people would think these protesters represented me. More than that, I worried about how it all left trans people feeling. Perhaps, a year later, we have a clear answer. Plans for the first London Trans Pride have been announced. Due to take place on 14 September, the event will celebrate and centre trans and gender nonconforming people. There will be daytime family-friendly events such as panel discussions and zine making , as well as stalls from trans charities and businesses, followed later by an afterparty with trans musicians, performers and DJs.

If London needs a separate Trans Pride, what does that say about LGBT solidarity?

In the same way that the wider LGBT communities worldwide have adopted specific flags, as well as the Rainbow flag , the transgender community, organizations, and individuals around the world are widely represented by the blue, pink, and white flag designed by Monica Helms , but there are several flags used and endorsed by the varying transgender individuals, organizations and communities. The most prominent [3] of these flag designs is known as the "Transgender Pride Flag" which is a symbol of transgender pride and diversity, and transgender rights. The flag represents the transgender community and consists of five horizontal stripes: two light blue, two pinks, and one white in the center.
